Hanover/Grace Scrimmage

This summer, Hanover Baptist Church teamed up with Grace Presbyterian Church to play co-ed softball at Barnesfield Park (near Dahlgren). Hanovers players were lead by Ward Weberg. Here is the season summary:

September 1—Loss to Grace

Tonight we had an end-of-the-season Once a Team—Now Competitors scrimmage. Throughout the season, our co-ed team has included members from Grace Presbyterian and Hanover Baptist. This time Hanover squared off against Grace for a post-season scrimmage. Hanover ended up with the fewest points, but our spirit was not defeated!

August 16—Loss to Shiloh

The team wrapped-up a winning season in a hard-fought second outing with Shiloh. Ward Weberg reports: Grace/Hanover lost a close game in the bottom of the seventh to Shiloh to end the season with 5 wins & 1 loss (if our win by forfeit is included, it is 6-1). It was a great season with several individuals learning the game for the first time—and doing very well.

The season was fun, but far too short for many of our players.

August 9—Win/Win with Mountain View

Here's Ward's report: Mountain View did not have but five players…so everyone's name was put in hat and drawn out to create two teams for an inter-church scrimmage.[It was] an enjoyable evening with a close score of 10-11.

August 4—Win Against St. John's

The team remains undefeated with a win over St. Johns Episcopal.

Ward reported from the field: [Team] members continued with good hitting and fielding—but this game also showed displays of exceptional base running and coaching that resulted in additional scoring.

July 28—Win Against Mountain View

The team continued its winning streak with a squeaker over Mountain View Baptist.

Behind by one point, Grace/Hanover surged ahead with two runs in the 7th inning. Hanging on in this hard-fought nail-biter, the team carried the day.

July 26—Win Against Gateway

With a win this week, were now 3-and-0! Heres Wards report from the field:

With several team members on vacation, members of the Grace/Hanover squad rotated positions continuously to find the right balance—and so they did! For Hanover; Scott Soderlund on the mound again delivered up the pitching, backed up on defense by Pizana family members Rachel and Matt in the outfield, and Mike at second base. Offensively, all added to the run tally with good line drive hitting from Scott and Rachel, while Mike and Matt brought roars from the stands with Mike just beating a throw to home plate to score an in the park home run (hit to the fence!), and Matt hitting yet another deep fly ball resulting in a stand up triple.

July 21—Game with Round Hill—Cancelled

July 12—Win Against Dahlgren/Trinity

Our team is now 2-and-0! Here’s Ward’s report from the field: “Once again the members from the Lowe and Pizana families added hitting and fielding strength—with two notable moments. First was Matt Pizana exploding on one pitch, hitting deep to the outfield and catching the defense by surprise. The second was Dave Lowe making a full speed running and fully extended catch of a fly ball, followed by a rolling tumble—and hanging on for the out!

“Additionally, Ryan Evans displayed south-paw hitting that kept the defense guessing as he worked the right side of the field.

“Lastly, Stephanie Weberg, behind the plate, catching—displayed an unusual method of tangling up an opposing base runner while attempting to prevent a score: While Stephanie was bending over to catch the incoming throw, the base runner ended up across Stephanie’s back reaching for the home plate. It appeared that Stephanie was going to carry the young lady off the field rather than giving up the score! Alas, the runner was able to reach out and touch the plate!”

July 05—Win Against Shiloh

It was a good day at the ball field with a close game and good fellowship! Fielding, hitting, and base running by members of the Pizana and Lowe families contributed greatly to the win, along with some good pitching by Scott Soderlund.
